The Newark Open attracts some of the best professional mini-golfers from Ohio and neighboring states.

"People take it extremely seriously," said Matt Male, who plays professionally and lives in Central Ohio. "If you're not acing about 30 percent to 50 percent of the holes out here, it's really hard to contend."

Male, who still has a day-job, turned pro in 2014.

By 2015, he was considered one of the best players in the game. He won the U.S. ProMiniGolf Association's Masters in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

"It was an exhilarating experience," Male told WSYX/WTTE. "It was such a hard tournament to win."

This weekend, Male will compete at the Newark Open at Putterz, his home course.

"I think everybody gets a little nervous, because the competition is so fierce," he said.
