The superintendent of Delaware City Schools said he was surprised at the margin of victory for the levy his district needs -- surprised and relieved at its passage.

Voters said yes to the levy by a nearly 60-40 margin. Paul Craft said his district needs the money just to maintain services at their current levels.

Craft said the district faces growing enrollment, but state funding is capped, so student numbers go up and state money does not keep pace.

"All this does is continue to let us be one of the lowest spending districts in Ohio," he said. "But we're committed to being good stewards of our taxpayer dollars going forwrd while still delivering a great education for our kids."

Craft said the district faced teacher layoffs and a loss of extra-curriculars if the issue had failed.

The Big Walnut School District also approved a school levy, winning by just 140 votes.
