IN THE NEWS: iPHONE RECOVERED AFTER THEFT IN OREGON
MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) -- A smartphone, plus a not-so-smart criminal -- equals an arrest in Oregon. Authorities in Eugene say they have arrested a man after police used an app to locate a stolen iPhone in the trunk of his car. A couple woke up Friday morning to find that a sliding door they had left open had been closed. As they looked around the place, they realized their iPhone, a tablet and a laptop had been swiped. While officers were at the home, the victims launched the "Find my iPhone" app -- and it turned up a location in a parking lot. When officers got to the lot, they found a 41-year-old man sleeping in his car. When they roused him, they turned up the stolen iPhone and the other electronics in his trunk. Authorities say Gregory Gross has confessed and has been booked on burglary and theft charges.

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) -- It's one thing for a smartphone to alert authorities to a thief after the deal. But in this case, a pair of hapless California men were able to lead authorities to them BEFORE they broke into a car in search of drugs. Authorities in Fresno say one of the men "pocket dialed" 911 -- and a dispatcher was able to hear their rambling 35-minute conversation that centered on the men's plan to get drugs by breaking into a vehicle. It wasn't long after the break in that police were on their tail. One of the suspects was incredulous that they tipped police off themselves.
