Hilliard police warn of scammer posing as AEP employee
HILLIARD, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) -- The Hilliard Division of Police has issued a warning to its citizens after an attempted scam over the phone.
Police said some claiming to be "AEP Customer Solutions" is calling residents and requesting they make a same-day payment or get their utility shut off. In order to avoid a shut off they're instructing residents to pick up a pre-paid debit card at the nearest Kroger for $500.
Officials said the call back number provided is 1-800-495-1677, and the contact name is Richard. They added the number uses the same prompts as AEP which makes the scam very believable.
