New push for transparency following ABC 6 investigation
ABC 6 Investigator Brooks Jarosz spoke to a room full of Ohio county auditors about a recent investigation into questionable spending by Ohio prosecutors and sheriffs.
The County Auditor’s Association of Ohio invited Jarosz after exposing expensive trips, gifts and meals at five-star restaurants billed to taxpayers in some counties.
The money is held in outside bank accounts like the “Furtherance of Justice Fund” which is supposed to be used for crime-fighting, education and investigations. The accounts are only partially audited by the state every three years, otherwise the county auditors only get summary reports, which are often vague.
ABC 6 On Your Side is pushing for transparency and legislation to prevent potential abuse or lavish spending.
“I hate seeing people get taken advantage of,” ABC 6 Investigator Brooks Jarosz said. “As a journalist, my job is to make sure that public officials are held accountable and that all of your money, my money and the people’s money is spent responsibly.”
Auditor of State Dave Yost is reviewing what ABC 6 uncovered and is considering a special audit into the Athens County prosecutor’s bank accounts.
