Police confirmed a man has died after he was hit by a passing semi on a north Columbus highway ramp last week.

According to police, 24-year-old Lawrence Mayer has died after he was hit by a semi on the ramp from I-71 SB to I-270 WB near Polaris.

Police said Mayer lost control of his car near on the ramp and crashed down into an embankment on the right side of the roadway. He then exited his car and walked up the roadway. According to police, a passing sem-tractor then hit Mayer while he was walking on the ramp. He was rushed to Grant Medical Center with life threatening injuries.

On Monday afternoon, police said Mayer succumbed to his injuries. He was pronounced dead at 4:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, the Ohio State men's gymnastics coach Rustam Sharipov released a statement about Meyer, an Indiana native competed for OSU from 2012-15.

Larry was the kind of guy that brightened the whole room wherever he was. His infectious attitude had a positive impact on those he interacted with on a daily basis. Our gymnastics family is hurting right now, Larry was such a special person. We all know that Larry is in a better place and will continue to look over us. I’m grateful for all the moments and memories that have been made with Larry. In this time of despair, our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time.

Police continued to investigate. No charges have been filed against the semi driver.

This was the city's 17th traffic fatality this year.
