Motorcyclist killed in collision near Johnstown
A motorcyclist was killed after a head-on collision with a sedan in Licking County Thursday evening.
According to the Granville Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the collision happened on US-62, just east of Johnstown, around 6:30 p.m.
OSHP said there were three vehicles involved, including the motorcycle. They said 21-year-old Joseph Schmitz was driving a 2010 Nissan Altima westbound behind 31-year-old Daniel Potter's Ford F-150.
Per OSHP, Potter, whose truck was pulling a trailer without operation tail lights or turn signals, stopped to turn left onto Beech Road. They said Schmitz failed to slow down in time, and veered left to avoid a collision.
Schmitz's car then hit an oncoming 2006 Kawasaki Vulcan driven by 51-year-old Nicholas Ehrhardt of Johnstown. He was pronounced dead at the scene per OSHP.
Troopers said Ehrhardt was wearing a helmet. Alcohol or drug use was unknown as of Friday morning.
"The Ohio State Highway Patrol reminds all motorists to allow enough space between vehicles in order to stop safely," they said in a release.
The crash remained under investigation.
