There's a scheme targeting parent teacher organizations in Central Ohio.

The PTO at Dublin Jerome High School is one of those groups and they are fighting back by warning others.

The organization says it received an e-mail from someone who claimed to be the PTO President of Dublin Jerome High School.

The person who sent the email requested more than $4,000.

"We're just concerned because they knew our relationship, president and treasurer and it was the same with other people that had been targeted," said Jamie Majni who is the Treasurer of the PTO at Dublin Jerome High School.

Even though the request came from Sherri Widder's e-mail account, the President of the PTO for Dublin Jerome High School, she said she isn't the one who sent it.

"Just the urgency of it and the amount of it. It was totally outside of how we do our business in the PTO," said Majni.

The person who sent the e-mail put Widder's name on the bottom of the request, which was another red flag was the way the email was written.

Widder said the person who sent the email used language that she would not normally use in a PTO email.

Widder then warned other PTO members within the Dublin City School District and got three responses from PTO members, who said they received similar e-mails.

The Ohio Attorney General's office said the scheme is similar to a spear phishing scam. That's where names, titles and email addresses are taken from social media or other websites.
