A major construction project on the Ohio State University campus is changing the parking situation and traffic patterns for thousands near OSU Wexner Medical Center and Ohio Stadium.

The project is expected to last a couple of years and it could create some headaches for students, workers and Buckeye fans.

Two major surface parking lots are closed along Cannon Drive between 12th Avenue and Medical Center Drive. The Polo lots and the Dodd lots have 2,100 spaces near 'The Shoe.'

The university is starting phase one of the construction to straighten Cannon Drive near the medical center and stadium.

The university says it is trying to free up twelve acres for development and create flood protection along the Olentangy River.

Hospital employees say it will be hard on them, as well as visitors heading to the stadium for home football games.

"I'm on a church team that's centered at the towers, so I'm not going to be able to use Cannon," said Michael Lloyd, an OSU student.

University officials said they're offering several different options while urging people to arrive early, avoid the medical center area and expect delays. Parking in the 9th Avenue garage or in west campus lots near Kenny Road are also options.

The university said there will be extra police and transportation workers will be on hand to help with the traffic. The university is also offering an app that will help people get around.

There is also information about the project and routes on the OSU webpage.
