Police: Man beaten, robbed by 4 people after responding to Craigslist ad
Columbus police are on the search for four African-American males they said allegedly jumped and beat a 24-year-old man during a bogus transaction Tuesday afternoon.
Robbery detectives said the victim was lured to the 1500 block of Victory Court in order to purchase what he thought was a PS4 game system he spotted on Craigslist.
When the victim walked up to the address he was given, four males, who don't live there, darted out and began beating the man and hitting him with a crowbar, according to Columbus police.
"They started punching him, and said 'give us your money,' and he said 'no,' and they said 'we'll keep hitting you until you give us your money,'" said Mike Slaypack, the victim's father.
Slaypack said the thieves swiped $200 from his son, then bolted away on foot.
The injured victim texted his mother for help.
Soon after, the Northeast Columbus Waltham Woods community was surrounded with police and paramedics.
"It's really bad because school kids are walking home and they could've gotten in the middle of it," said Eric Layne, who lives feet from the crime scene.
Columbus police advise people conduct transactions from online ads at the city's five police substations where there are lots of lights and security cameras.
The victim was taken to St. Ann's hospital for his injuries.
"He's going to be okay, thankfully. God's watching over us, that's for sure" Slaypack added.
