Police searching for 'armed & dangerous' suspect after 1 killed, 1 injured in shooting
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) —
A man was killed and his brother seriously injured after a home invasion and shooting in the Hilltop neighborhood early Wednesday morning, Columbus police said.
Jason Collins, 32, was pronounced dead at the scene, just after 2:00 a.m. His brother, Joseph Collins, Jr, 35, was rushed to Mt. Carmel West Hospital in serious condition. Police say both victims were found inside a home on North Harris Avenue.
Detectives have identified Harry Lee Lathon Jr. as the suspect, and have filed aggravated murder charges against him. Lathon's home address is on Minnesota Avenue in northeast Columbus, but police say his whereabouts are unknown. They are warning people he should be considered armed and dangerous.
Police say Lathon forced his way into the North Harris Avenue home in an apparent home invasion before shooting the victims. They aren't sure if other suspects were involved, but say the suspect was seen leaving the area in a late model white Honda Odyssey.
The deadly shooting marked the 131st homicide in Columbus this year, and brought the city closer to the record number of 139 homicides from 1991.
