Troopers start campaign to make U.S. 62 safer
LICKING COUNTY, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) —
It's a new campaign called "Help us save lives on 62." State troopers have beefed up patrols along a stretch of roadway to help keep you safe.
Speed is just on of the contributing factors to the crashes state troopers see along U.S. 62 in Licking County.
Since January of 2014 to last month there have been 13 deadly crashes on 62 between New Albany and Utica
"That's very high for any stretch of road," said State Trooper Travis Woodward.
Troopers have targeted the area before trying to get drivers to slow down and pay more attention on the road.
Sgt. Woodyard says it's disheartening to know the numbers are going down.
"There seems to be all types of contributing factors, " said Sgt. Woodyard. "Speeding, going left of center, failure to yield, those are the top three and assured clear distance is in there as well."
The new campaign will saturate the area with troopers and they're reaching out to the community.
" We're being assisted by the motorcycle and aviation unit. We're also doing outreach in the community". Sgt. Woodyard said.
Bottom line he says -- drivers need to pay more attention while driving and obey the traffic laws.
