COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) -- The Kroger location at University City near Ohio State's campus will close after 56 years, according to a statement released by the company on Thursday.

Kroger said the building's landlord is redeveloping the site and chosen not to extend the company's lease for the store located at 2913 Olentangy River Road. Operations will cease there at 5 p.m. on October 16.

“It has been an honor to serve the University community for the past 56 years,” said Bill Green, vice president of operations for Kroger’s Columbus Division. “We look forward to providing continued service to our customers at our other campus-area Kroger locations.”

The location's fuel center will close the same time the store does.

Officials said Kroger will offer all 63 store associates the opportunity to transfer to another of the company’s 121 Columbus Division locations.
