Whitehall firefighters using new-and-improved jaws of life
WHITEHALL, Oh (WSYX/WTTE) —
The Whitehall fire department has upgraded to a new version of the 'jaws of life.'
They've had the new equipment for a little more than a month.
The fire department bought the new hydraulic rescue tool while they were in the process of preparing to buy a new fire truck.
Whitehall firefighters said they decided to upgrade some new equipment as well.
The new jaws of life are battery-operated and will save minutes.
Whitehall firefighters said it took more time to get the old equipment up because it wasn't battery powered.
"The old tools were gas powered. So we had to always rely on making sure we had maintenance for the power unit to the generators -- we had fuel in their, oil in there, things like that," said John King, Battalion Chief for the Whitehall Division of Fire.
There are about two other fire departments in Central Ohio with battery-operated jaws of life.
Whitehall firefighters said they've only had to use the new equipment one time, so far.
