NEWPORT NEWS, Va, (WSET) -- Police in Newport News say that no foul play is suspected after a man's body was found in his home.

WTVR reports that police conducted a welfare check around 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

A neighbor said the man's nephew in California contacted him to check on the man Thursday. According to the neighbor, he was unable to check because he was going out of town on Friday.

When the neighbor went to check on Saturday morning, he said he grew concerned about an odor coming from the home.

After he knocked on the door several times without receiving an answer, he called police.

“I gave them the key," he said. "They entered the house and found the gentleman.”

According to officials, they believe the man had been dead for "multiple years".

The neighbor who went to check on the man said the last time he saw him was two years ago.

“But he was very secluded and didn’t want to be bothered with a whole bunch of people,” the neighbor said.

Others who live in the neighborhood were stunned because they assumed the gentleman, who was in his late sixties, had moved in with family or into a retirement home.

"We didn’t smell anything. Nothing was off," one woman said.
