Faulty furnace fixed for elderly woman after calls from ABC 6 On Your Side
Seton South, a senior apartment complex located just off of South High Street, looks toasty warm on the outside. But inside Terri Mallon's first-floor apartment it's chilly.
Her furnace has been on the blink since December 8th.
Mallon said it took four visits from a furnace tech to discover what was wrong with her faulty furnace. "The circuit board is out and he would fix it for me the day after Christmas," she said.
When Christmas came and went, she called ABC 6 On Your Side.
"I called you because 6 is always on your side," said Mallon. "Anybody who wants something, they call 6 and they get the action."
She said she had been turning on the oven at night just to stay warm. We told her how dangerous that was to both her and the other people in the building.
"I know and I know better, but I get so cold," she said.
She says the furnace works - sometimes.
"If I turn it on 90 it'll come on, but there's no guarantee it's going to go off," Mallon said. "He (the building's maintenance man) told me after got warm to turn it back off and leave it off. So I'm playing the game of on and off. On and off. On and off."
She said it's either that or turn on the space heater the size of a small toaster.
"Only 6 will help the people," she said. "The other channels were called and they would not come. But you always respond."
ABC 6 On Your Side called the building's maintenance man, who said he was off for the New Year's holiday. We tried the building's manager, and the corporate office for BRC Properties, which manages the place, but they too were closed. Then we called Accurate Plumbing and Cooling, the business that ordered the part.
They said they'd find the part and install it, promising she would have heat by 5 pm that day.
"Oh how can I ever thank you?" said Mallon. "How do I say thank you? Now I can go to sleep at night without worrying about the stove catching something on fire. I just don't know how to thank channel 6 for coming here and doing this for me. Thank you!"
