ABC 6 Investigates: Gordon Gee's New Office

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 01:09 AM EDT
COLUMBUS (Brooks Jarosz) – Outgoing Ohio State University President Gordon Gee is getting a new job and a new office at a hefty price.

ABC 6 requested public records and found that Gee is getting a spacious, new office to a tune of at least $190,000.

We asked around campus about the major renovation planned for the first floor of the John Glenn School of Public Affairs.

ABC 6 investigators learned the plan calls for closing a corridor to create two rooms, both for Gee and his assistant. We checked and Gee’s contract says he’ll have a tenured position at the Moritz College of Law, not the School of Public Affairs.

OSU said it was unsure where the funding would come from to pay for the office, however, sources tell ABC 6  the project was approved by the Board of Trustees.

"This is a public institution.  It sends a really bad message," liberal think-tank director Brian Rothenberg with Progress Ohio said.

However, many Gordon Gee lovers are okay with the cost of construction.

“He's brought in billions of dollars to the university,” one student said.

That price tag could pay for one year’s tuition for 18 in-state students. You could also buy a house for $190,000. In fact, one two-story home in Hilliard lists for $190,000, which includes a new kitchen, two bathrooms and even an upstairs loft.

For Lorna Whyte, OSU runs in the family. In her opinion, money’s tight and tuition’s high.

“My son goes here and my husband came to school here,” Lorna Whyte said. “The money is astronomical," she added.

Serious money is moving quickly and we asked to see the design plans, but they have not yet been released to ABC 6.

"Why can't he have an office that's already here?” Whyte asked. ”And maybe just needs some updating, painting and new furniture.”

ABC 6 investigators asked OSU for a breakdown of the renovation costs. Employees told us they’re working on it. We’ve requested the bids and design plans, but haven’t received them yet.

Construction is set to get underway August 1st and  the new office will be completed by September 20th.

IN THE NEWS: PANDORA LAWSUIT FILED BY RECORD LABELS

NEW YORK (AP) -- Oldies, but goodies are the latest battleground in the fight between major record labels and a major music streaming service. The labels are suing Internet radio giant Pandora for copyright infringement for using songs recorded before 1972 without paying license fees. The labels -- which include divisions of Sony, Warner and Universal -- claim songs like Aretha Franklin's "Respect" and the Beatles' "Hey Jude" aren't covered by federal copyright law -- but are protected in common law by states, which include New York. The labels say Pandora and similar services have deprived the artists and labels of tens of millions of dollars each year. The labels also sued satellite radio company Sirius XM Holdings Inc. last year in a similar case. Pandora says in a statement that it is "confident in its legal position" and expects the matter to be resolved quickly.

It's aimed at stopping the practice of jilted lovers from posting explicit pictures of their ex's to get back at them for leaving the relationship. Last year, California made it a misdemeanor to post such images.

In Colorado, a pot holiday goes mainstream
April 20, 2014 07:08 GMT

By NICHOLAS RICCARDI

DENVER (AP) -- The 4/20 stoner holiday is going mainstream in Colorado.

April 20 has traditionally been a day for marijuana activists to defiantly light up to protest their drug of choice being outlawed. But Colorado has legalized pot. This weekend is filled with marijuana-themed activities that will culminate at a festival at a park in downtown Denver. Tens of thousands of people are expected to smoke marijuana at 4:20 p.m. MDT Sunday.

There is heavy security at the event after a shooting marred it last year. This year the festival is being run by a professional event company. It's short on pro-legalization speeches and instead crowded with vendor booths. A separate marijuana industry event called the Cannabis Cup north of downtown is also drawing thousands.

PALO ALTO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 03/06/14 --
PunchTab, the leading omni-channel loyalty and engagement platform,
announced today the release of their Android SDK. The SDK is a free
toolkit that provides Android mobile and tablet developers the capability
to add customized loyalty and engagement programs to any app to help
increase usage, purchase, awareness, and brand engagement.
With tens of thousands of apps hitting the market every month and
billions of dollars spent on mobile marketing, the world of mobile
development has become a congested, competitive marketplace to carve out
success. Generating user awareness and continued use remain critical
challenges for organizations that utilize mobile applications to engage
customers, or add mobile as part of larger omni-channel initiatives.
Android developers can now implement PunchTab's loyalty and engagement
infrastructure in mobile apps, incentivizing users to take actions that
meet marketing agendas and business goals.
"Mobile is the most important channel for brands when it comes to
engaging consumers with relevant, real-time messages and offers.
According to a recent study, 83% of consumers expect to make more
purchases via mobile in the next 12 months, a 15% increase from today's
current statistics -- this is a critical proof point of how important
mobile has become for brands. Awareness, engagement, and enhanced loyalty
are essential components in the success of a mobile app," said PunchTab
Founder and CEO Ranjith Kumaran. "With our Android SDK we can provide
Android developers with the same high-quality, easy-to-use functionality
that the PunchTab platform offers to over 19,000 active programs on our
 platform."
The Android opportunity is significant. Google Play accounted for almost
75 percent of total app downloads in 2013 and according to Distimo,
Google Play's revenue share has actually been growing at the expense of
Apple's. Since June 2013, Google Play's revenue jumped 51 percent. The
statistics are a window into the continuously growing Android mobile
application market that does not appear to be slowing down. Brands have
taken notice and with the PunchTab Android SDK, they have an opportunity
to reach even more consumers on mobile.
Analyst and TIME tech columnist, Ben Bajarin estimates that over one
billion Android smartphones will be sold in 2014, and by the end of 2014
mobile web users will be three times that of the desktop web. "Mobile can
no longer be a side strategy for brands, it needs to be a central
strategy as it's an essential element for maintaining consumer
engagement. The Android opportunity is one that cannot be overlooked,"
 Bajarin reports.
PunchTab's Android SDK offers mobile developers a free toolkit with an
easy to integrate static library and customizable features to most
effectively meet bottom line business goals. Developers can easily
reward-enable engagement, repeat usage, social sharing, and more.

WASHINGTON, DC -- (Marketwired) -- 02/26/14 --
The following is a statement by National Association of Realtors(R)
 President Steve Brown:
"NAR supports reforms that promote economic growth, but we strongly
oppose severely altering the rules that govern ownership and investment
in real estate. Real estate powers almost one-fifth of the U.S. economy,
employs more than 17 million Americans, and contributes a quarter of all
federal and state tax revenue and as much as 70 percent of local taxes.
"We are extremely disappointed with several of the provisions contained
in U.S. House Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp's tax reform draft
released today, namely proposed limits on the mortgage interest deduction
and capital gains, and the repeal of deductions for state and local
property taxes. These proposed changes to the taxation of real estate
will impact every single American, either directly or indirectly.
"NAR will carefully analyze the details of the Chairman's plan so we can
best educate Congress and the public about how this plan would impact the
owners, consumers, and producers of both residential and commercial real
 estate."
The National Association of Realtors(R), "The Voice for Real Estate," is
America's largest trade association, representing 1 million members
involved in all aspects of the residential and commercial real estate
 industries.
