COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) -- The Ohio State University men's basketball team was not invited to to play postseason basketball in the National Invitational Tournament (NIT).

The 32 teams invited to the NIT are considered to be the best who didn't make the field of 68 for the NCAA tournament.

OSU was 17-15 in the regular (7-11 in the Big Ten) before they lost to Rutgers in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament on Wednesday. It was the Scarlet Knights' first Big Ten tourney win since joining the league three seasons ago.

The day of that loss, OSU athletic director Gene Smith told reporters that Thad Matta would return as the Buckeyes' head coach for his 14th season, despite missing out on the NCAA tournament for a second consecutive year.

Should Ohio State not play in the third-rated postseason tournament, the College Basketball Invitational, it would mark the first time the program hasn't played in the postseason since 2005.
