Columbus Crew SC rally for draw with Sporting Kansas City


COLUMBUS -- The Crew SC didn't get three points but a sporty second half goal by Ola Kamara, his 15th of the year, forged a draw with Sporting KC.

Kamara headed in a corner kick from Pedro Santos in first-half stoppage time, leveling the score. With his goal, Kamara has now scored 31 goals for the Black & Gold in 54 regular-season appearances (48 starts), and sits in 10th place on Crew SC’s list of all-time regular-season scorers. In 2017, Kamara has made 29 regular-season appearances (28 starts) and is currently the leading scorer for the Black & Gold in the 2017 MLS regular season with 14 goals, ahead of Justin Meram (11 goals) and Federico Higuain (nine goals).

Midfielder Pedro Santos took the corner kick that led to Ola Kamara’s goal in first-half stoppage time in today’s match against Sporting Kansas City. Santos played 63 minutes, had two shots, created two chances and made one tackle against Sporting KC. In 2017, Santos has made four regular-season appearances (three starts), providing two assists.

Justin Meram made his 130th regular-season start (183rd appearance) for Crew SC in today’s match. With his start against Sporting Kansas City, Meram tied William Hesmer for 10th place on Crew SC’s all-time list of regular-season starts. Meram is behind Chad Marshall (250 starts), Mike Clark (216), Eddie Gaven (198), Brian Maisonneuve (159), Brian McBride (158), Frankie Hejduk (143), Federico Higuain (138), Danny O’Rourke (137), and Robert Warzycha (134). In addition to making 130 starts (183 appearances), Meram has also registered 35 goals and 33 assists in regular-season action.

With the draw against Sporting Kansas City, Crew SC has now earned 32 points at home during the 2017 MLS regular season while posting a record of 10-3-2. This is the highest total of points earned at MAPFRE Stadium by the Black & Gold since Gregg Berhalter became Sporting Director and Head Coach of the club (2014 to present). Additionally, this is the highest total of points home for the Black & Gold since the 2012 regular season, when the club posted a home record of 11-3-3 and earned 36 points.

Today’s draw against Sporting Kansas City brought Crew SC’s undefeated streak at home to five matches (3-0-2), dating back to a 1-0 win against the Philadelphia Union at MAPFRE Stadium on July 22. Additionally, the Black & Gold’s are now on a five-match undefeated streak overall, with a record of 4-0-1 dating back to a 3-1 home victory over the Chicago Fire on August 12. Over that span, Crew SC has outscored its opponents 9-4.

With the draw in today’s match, Crew SC brings its 2017 regular-season record to 13-12-4. Next up, Crew SC travels to take on Vancouver Whitecaps FC for their lone regular-season meeting of 2017.
