Crew SC enhances playoff push with 3-2 win over visiting Red Bulls
COLUMBUS -- Federico Higuain provided the assist on all three of Crew SC’s goals in tonight’s match against the New York Red Bulls. With the three helpers, Higuain reached 10 assists for the 2017 regular season, setting a new career-high. In addition to setting a new career-high, Higuain also tied with Brian McBride for second place in Crew SC’s all-time list of regular-season assists, with 45.
Higuain is behind only Robert Warzycha (61 assists). Since joining Crew SC in 2012, Higuain has made 146 regular-season appearances (141 starts), recording 48 goals and 45 assists. This year, Higuain has made 23 regular-season appearances (all starts), registering nine goals and 10 assists. Higuain currently leads the Black & Gold in assists for the 2017 MLS regular season, ahead of Justin Meram (seven assists).
Defender Josh Williams scored the game-winner in tonight’s match against the New York Red Bulls, his first goal of the 2017 MLS regular season. Williams’ goal came in the 66th minute, when he headed in a corner kick from Federico Higuain. This was Williams’ fifth MLS career goal and his first goal since 2013, when he scored for Crew SC in a 3-0 home victory over D.C. United (April 27). With Williams’ goal, 21 of the 22 players who have seen regular-season action in 2017 have contributed with either a goal or an assist. Williams has made 19 regular-season appearances (16 starts) and scored one goal.
Midfielder Justin Meram scored his 12th goal of the 2017 MLS regular season in tonight’s match against the New York Red Bulls. Meram scored in the 54th minute after receiving a pass from Federico Higuain. Meram played the 68 minutes, registering one goal, two shots, 50 touches and one tackle. In 2017, the Black & Gold are undefeated with a record of 9-0-0 in matches in which Meram has scored a goal. This year, Meram has made 31 regular-season appearances (29 starts) and has recorded 12 goals and seven assists.
Defender Jonathan Mensah scored Crew SC’s opening goal in tonight’s match against the New York Red Bulls. Mensah put the Black & Gold ahead just six minutes into the match, as he headed in a free kick from Federico Higuain. This was Mensah’s second goal of the 2017 MLS regular season, as he previously scored the game-winning goal in a home contest against FC Dallas (August 26). In 2017, Mensah has made 22 regular-season appearances (all starts), registering two goals.
With tonight’s win against the New York Red Bulls, goalkeeper Zack Steffen registered his 14th win of the 2017 MLS season, tying him with Steve Clark for first place in Crew SC’s list of most wins by a goalkeeper in his first year of play. In 2017, Steffen has made 31 regular-season appearances (all starts), registering 92 saves and 14 wins.
Tonight’s win against the New York Red Bulls brought Crew SC’s undefeated streak to seven matches (4-0-3), dating back to a 3-1 win against the Chicago Fire at MAPFRE Stadium on August 12. Over that span, Crew SC has outscored its opponents 14-8. Tonight’s victory also brought the Black & Gold’s undefeated streak at home to six matches (5-0-1), dating back to a 1-0 win over the Philadelphia Union on July 22. In that time, Columbus has outscored its opponents 12-5 at home.
