Crew SC take advantage of Meram goal to thwart Philly, 1-0
COLUMBUS -- Muggy night at MAPFRE Stadium but major for the home team as the black and gold score a must win against a depleted Philly Union roster.
In the first game of a home-and-home between the Philadelphia Union and Crew SC, Justin Meram scored the game’s only goal in a 1-0 win for Columbus on Saturday night at MAPFRE Stadium.
The win pushed the Crew SC into 6th place in the Eastern Conference, just above the playoff line.
The goal, one of the few scoring chances for either side on the night, came in the 65th minute when Meram’s attempt deflected off Philly center back Joshua Yaro and into the back of the net.
The Union, missing several key players due to the Gold Cup, injury or suspension, will look for revenge when they host Crew SC in just four days.
