Ohio State mens lacrosse stays unbeaten, rocks top-ranked Denver


COLUMBUS -- Ohio State mens lacrosse knows how to spell respect.

Snubbed by a lack of preseason recognition, Ohio State is off to its best start in 50 years. The unbeaten Buckeyes are 9-0 after a memorable Sunday evening.

The 18th ranked Buckeyes defeated No. 1-ranked Denver, 16-7, Sunday in Ohio Stadium. Ohio State had goals from seven players and shut out the Pioneers for nearly 40 minutes en route to the win.

Ohio State is now 9-0 on the season after back-to-back wins over Top 10 teams. The Buckeyes defeated No. 10 Towson on the road Wednesday. The Buckeyes travel for a game at No. 4 Notre Dame at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The Buckeyes and Pioneers traded early goals before Ohio State went on a 10-goal run to lead 11-1 with 7:28 left in the third quarter.

Freshman Tre Leclaire had five goals and seven points in the win, while Senior Eric Fannell had three goals and four assists for seven points.

Senior Johnny Pearson netted a hat trick and junior Colin Chell had four points on a goal and three assists.

Senior goalie Tom Carey had 11 saves and allowed just six goals (two in the first three quarters) and senior Jake Withers won 10 faceoffs. Junior Freddy Freibott had five groundballs, while sophomore Logan Maccani and Ben Randall each caused two turnovers. .
