The Football Fever: Hill suspended, Weber on the mend as Camp Meyer moves into week two
COLUMBUS -- A 13-game starter a year ago, senior defensive tackle Michael Hill has been suspended for a "few" games according to head coach Urban Meyer who confirmed Monday Hill would miss at least the opener at Indiana August 31st
Meyer declined to discuss the specifics or characterize the nature of the suspension though the defensive line is the Bucks greatest strength going into the 2017 season. Meyer named at least five players who could pick up the slack for Hill including Las Vegas freshman Haskell Garrett.
Meyer said starting running back Mike Weber practiced Monday but not full go as he continues to rehab a hamstring injury. "We are just being very careful with him," said the Buckeyes sixth-year coach. The offensive backfield is another area where the Buckeyes are steeped in talent with Antonio Williams, freshman J.K. Dobbins and Demario McCall waiting in the wings.
Meyer also commenting on Tate Martell's solid showing in the team's first scrimmage Saturday. "He's taken some maturity pills. He was not very mature in the spring but is doing a very good job now, just his professionalism..."
Coach Greg Studrawa on the ideal number of offensive lineman you’d like to have ready to play: “Eight or ten. You want to get backup at tackle, you want to get a backup at guard, and obviously you need a backup center. I think right now we’re on the path to have more than one.”
On the depth of the offensive line: “Unbelievable. It’s way different from where it was last year, the confidence in these guys. There are three guys in some spots getting reps because they’re doing so well. So that’s exciting. That creates competition and helps you build a cohesive line.”
On redshirt sophomore Matthew Burrell: “I think it’s one of those things where you see young guys come in, and they’re doing things and getting opportunities, and one day the switch goes off and they realize ‘I guess I better go.’ That’s the best way I can describe what’s happened to Matt. He’s realized ‘I’ve got to go, this is my time, I’ve been here long enough. It’s time to perform.’ That’s exactly how he’s practicing, that’s exactly how he’s watching film.”
