The Football Fever: Meyer opens spring ball looking for vertical passing game

COLUMBUS -- Urban Meyer likes to pound the ball with his his running game and then go over the top with the deep pass.

He was unable to find a big play in the passing game in 2016 and that seems to be the emphasis for his sixth spring practice session at Ohio State.

"Life is pretty good when that happens," Meyer told reporters Tuesday. "But if you get a sack or a bad throw then you have a problem so our plan is to work on the deep ball."

Ohio State passing efficiency fell from 169.8 in the 2014 National Championship season to 135.3 in 2016 when the Buckeyes reached the College Football Playoff but were eliminated by eventual national champ Clemson, 31-0 in the Fiesta Bowl.

J.T. Barrett returns at quarterback and is the school's all-time leader in touchdowns produced. He's got three impressive talents behind him in Joey Burrow, Dwayne Haskins and Tate Martell.

Tuesday marked the first of 15 practices for the Bucks culminating with the Spring Game Saturday April 15th.
