Ohio Representative Applauds Appointment of OSU's First Black President

COLUMBUS (Chris Vanocur/Kate Liebers) -- Ohio's African-American community hailed Ohio State University's appointment of Michael Drake -- the university's first black president.

State Rep. Bill Patmon put the historical moment in perspective.

"It sends a message that Ohio State is what it purports to be -- an institution of higher learning, that it has its arms wide open," Patmon said.

He added that he expected Drake would be judged on his performance, not his race.

"At the end of the day, we want the pilot to be the very best pilot, especially if we are on the plan," Patmon said. "And in Ohio, there are a lot of folks on the plane when it comes to the Ohio State."
