The Ohio House of Representatives passed Wednesday House Bill 612, which prevents Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine or the Ohio Department of Health from shutting down businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The bill passed with a 75-11 vote.

H.B. 621, also known as the Business Fairness Act, was introduced in May by Reps. Shane Wilkin and Jon Cross, both Republican members in the House.

The bill will now head to the Senate.

DeWine said he will veto the bill.

"This is certainly not the right time to be trying to diminish public health in the state of Ohio," DeWine said while speaking at John Glenn International Airport. "This is a direct attack on public health, it's an attack on the safety of the people of Ohio."

DeWine said the COVID-19 pandemic is the most serious health crisis in Ohio in the last century.

"For members in the state legislature to pick this time to say 'oh no, we can't do certain things. We can't protect the people of the state of Ohio' is just horribly misguided," DeWine said.
