1 Person Pronounced Dead In Early Morning Apartment Fire

COLUMBUS (Mike McCarthy/Kate Murphy) -- One person is dead after an apartment fire in East Columbus.Firefighters arrived at 1177 Fountain Lane{} at The Village of Eden's Crossing around 7:30 a.m.They found intense flames coming from the rear of Unit C, and the fire quickly spread to the second floor of the townhouse. Firefighters then discovered the body of an adult on the first floor living area, Battalion Chief Tracy Smith said. "The unit didn't appear to have any working smoke detectors," Smith said. It also looked as if the person hadn't tried to escape, she said. No information on the person's identity has been released. At least five people called 911, according to records obtained by ABC 6 and FOX 28. "It's a huge fire. I mean, like, huge," one passerby told a dispatcher. "I can feel the flames from inside my car."Neighbor Tracy Gossett said she was driving home and tried to help. "First I blew my horn, and then was yelling fire. Then I just jumped out and started banging on doors," she said. Crews were able to contain the flames from spreading to the other units in the building, Smith said. No other injuries were reported.
