Many novelists write in a quiet space. Kerry Winfrey writes with a child napping on her lap.

"It's hard to find time when you have a job or a child or other obligations," she told ABC 6/FOX 28, "but I would usually write pretty late into the night."

Getting a publisher wasn't easy. Winfrey faced a lot of rejection, she said. In fact, until recently, writing was just a hobby.

"I was working at a job where I wasn't very creative," she said. "It was a good job, and everyone was very nice, but it wasn't very fulfilling. I really felt like I should try for my dream job."

Her patience and persistence paid off.

Her first novel, "Love and Other Alien Experiences" was released the day before her son's first birthday.

Kerry will appear at the Barnes and Noble in Pickerington to sign copies on Sunday, December 3 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Her second book will be released in July 2018.
