COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — Marion firefighters made a discovery while removing an old cornerstone marking what was once a fire station.
The department said the old fire station at West Center Street and David Street was set to be demolished, and the current owner, Ted Graham, let them remove the cornerstone for preservation.
Off-duty firefighters began removing the cornerstone before stopping to consult an engineer. But before they stopped, they found a box made of copper that had been soldered shut inside the cornerstone.
Marion Fire said the box is approx 8”x4”x4” and holds something inside. But what it contains is not known.
The cornerstone was placed in 1905, meaning the box was sealed inside 118 years ago.
It will be opened with the input of the Ohio Historical Society, with a public reveal planned in the future.
