Buckeye Lake under algal bloom advisory

The Ohio Department of Health issued an algal bloom/toxin advisory for Buckeye Lake Friday.

A sample taken last week revealed an elevated presence of microcystin, a toxin produced by certain freshwater cyanobacteria, more commonly known as blue-green algae.

Swimmers should avoid the water until the advisory is lifted.

According to the EPA, cyanobacteria is common in surface water when conditions are favorable.

ODH issued the elevated recreational public health advisory on Friday June, 16th. ODH has not given an indication when the advisory will end.

ABC 6/FOX 28 will continue to follow the advisory.
