COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — The Buckeye Ranch is taking action and helping countless young adults transition into adulthood.
The "My Place" Transitional Age Program offers services to young adults, ages 16-21 years old, transitioning from care, group housing, and/or foster care by providing one-bedroom apartments.
Lee Wooding is the Transition Age Youth Coordinator for the program.
"I want our young people when they leave here to be self-sufficient and really able to provide for themselves and their families," Wooding said.
The transition age program stresses important life skills about managing money, credit, and job searching.
Jahmie Woods lives with the program and calls it his "safe space".
"Everything here is no strings attached, they're here to help you," Woods said. "They're here to give to you instead of take from you."
The unique program is designed for young adults who are not ready to live completely on their own.
Woods said he's learning every day. "I've been learning how to save my money, learning how to be on time for things," He told ABC 6/FOX 28.
Wooding hopes the program gives young adults an idea of how to prepare for what is next in life.
We really want our young adults to take advantage of being here and being able to save up all the money that they can. So when their time comes to transition out of here, they have five, ten, 20-thousand in their savings so that they can support themselves when they’re on their own.
Staff members assist young adults with various skills and set them up for success in their next step in life.
It's located in east Columbus, which allows better access to public transportation.
