Central Ohio is a big fan of beer. In fact, it's home to over 50 breweries, however only one of those breweries are Black-owned. Crafted Culture is located in Gahanna and since opening last February they have made a major impact within the community.

Crafted Culture is one of just five Black-owned breweries in Ohio, but owned Anthony Perry is proud to be the first. Perry says, "The first Black-owned brewery in Central Ohio. You can't ever take that out the books."

The brewery's motto is "Be(er) the change and Perry hopes their brewery brings change for the present as well as the future. As long as we stay open, we’ll be the oldest. And as long as we keep doing what we're doing right now, we will be re-writing history," Perry adds.

It was intentional that the brewery opened during Black History Month last February and since opening day, the owners have realized their impact goes beyond what they have on tap. Perry says, "It creates comfort and consumption for people when they're included in what you do. They come into our space and it's not about consuming our beer."

A big contributor to Crafted Culture's success is having two owners with the same vision.

Peyton Peyton also an owner of the brewery and noticed something was missing in the city he grew up in. Peyton says, "Yeah, you know this is missing. Like I can go to these places, but I don't see anybody of my culture brewing beer. And owning it. You don't have to drink alcohol to come and experience this and have a good time."

As the business moves forward into year two, one major goal the brewery has is to help the growth of black-owned within the industry. Perry adds, "We are looking to inspire, coach and motivate the NEXT black-owned brewery to open up."
