Police: Man fatally shot during alleged carjacking in North Linden
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — Police say a man was fatally shot Saturday night while allegedly stealing a woman's car during an armed carjacking. The case has been forwarded to the Franklin County Prosecutor's Office for review.
Columbus Police said the shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. in the 1400 block of Oakland Park Avenue. Officers found 24-year-old Preston Allman suffering from a gunshot wound.
Columbus Fire medics took Allman to OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital in critical condition where he died at 10:09 p.m.
Police say he was shot while allegedly stealing a vehicle.
According to police, an unnamed 20-year-old woman was in a vehicle with a 20-year-old man in the parking lot of a carryout at 1482 Oakland Ave. when Allman approached while allegedly pointing a gun at them.
While driving away in the woman's vehicle, police said Allman pointed a gun at them a second time. That's when the woman reportedly pulled out a gun of her own and shot him.
Police say the man then crashed the vehicle across the street.
The department told WSYX Monday that investigators are still trying to determine if the woman was legally licensed to carry her handgun.
A grand jury will decide if the woman will face any charges out of the incident.
Police say they are withholding the deceased man's identity until the next of kin can be notified.
This case is the city's 65th homicide in 2021
