Deputy fires shots during pursuit at outlet mall in Delaware, suspect identified
Authorities are investigating an incident where a deputy fired shots as authorities pursued a suspect from the outlet mall in Delaware County on Tuesday night.
It stemmed from a reported shoplifting at the OshKosh B'Gosh store at the Tanger Outlet Mall, where officials said 28-year-old Alana Maria Hissong stole merchandise, then took off. The Delaware County Sheriff's Office was already in the parking lot as part of beefed up patrols due to previous thefts and found the vehicle witnesses said the suspect got in. Officials said a deputy approached the vehicle, but was knocked over as the suspect didn't obey his commands and fled. The officer wasn't injured.
Another deputy responding on foot fired shots at the car as it was approaching him, the sheriff's office said. Hissong wasn't hit, but investigators believe at least one of the shots blew hit her tire(s). She was two miles from the mall when another deputy heard the call and followed her. Moments later, she lost control and crashed at 3B's and K Rd and Berkshire Rd in Sunbury.
Hissong was taken to Grady Memorial for minor injuries.
BCI is investigating the incident in the parking lot involving the deputies and the pursuit. Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. The sheriff's office is investigating the theft.
Hissong was charged with; Driving While Under the Influence of Alcohol/Drugs, Driving Under Suspension, Seat Belt Required, Failure to Stop at Stop Sign, Robbery, and Failure to Comply with Order of Signal of P.O.
3B's and K. Rd was closed from 36/37 to Berkshire Rd. as authorities processed the scene.
