Suspect killed in Pike County deputy-involved shooting identified
WAVERLY, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) - Deputies say one person was killed after an officer-involved shooting in Pike County Thursday.
The shooting was reported around 4 a.m. The Pike County Sheriff's office said a deputy open fired on a suspect in the 13000 block of SR-124 near Latham. The suspect was later confirmed as James M. Burks.
Sheriff Reader said the shooting happened after an attempted traffic stop.
"The deputy gave chase on foot where he made contact with one of the fleeing subjects and a physical altercation took place that ultimately resulted in an officer-involved shooting where the suspect died due to the injuries he sustained," said Reader.
The sheriff later clarified that the deputy was medically treated at a local hospital.
Per union contract, Reader said the deputy will be placed on administrative leave.
Western Pike Schools were forced to closed due to the investigation blocking the road.
Sheriff's deputies surrounded a residence where the other persons in the vehicle were located along with BCI and Franklin County Sheriff's deputies.
The sheriff's department took in two men and three women for questioning from BCI agents.
