More than 100 family and friends gathered at Southwood Elementary School for a vigil for 23-year-old Donna Castleberry.

Police said Castleberry was fatally shot Thursday morning after stabbing an undercover police officer during an investigation into prostitution.

"The last thing that she said was I'll be home mommy, and I believed she would've had she had the chance" said Donna's mother, Michelle Dalton.

Investigators said the 30-year veteran officer was working in the area of Bellows and South Yale Avenues after complaints of prostitution. Detectives say the officer fired multiple shots inside his car after Castleberry stabbed the officer during some kind of altercation.

Castleberry was taken to Grant Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead. The officer underwent surgery and is recovering.

"I've thought over the last few days if I were in that position, I might lunge at someone if I feared for my life" said Castleberry's cousin Mary Laile.

Columbus police said the case remains under investigation.
