COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) -- Months after announcing he was running for the soon-to-be vacant governor's seat, U.S. Rep. Jim Renacci has pivoted and will run for a contested US Senate position.

Renacci's campaign staff confirmed the Wadsworth Republican will indeed switch races after meeting with White House staff on Wednesday. Officials suggested the Congressman would be a strong candidate for an important seat when Senator Sherrod Brown (D) is up for re-election this fall.

Rumors surfaced over the past week about a possible shift following the sudden end to State Treasurer Josh Mandel's campaign, who cited health concerns for his wife.

Renacci was one of the first people to announce their candidacy for governor last year.

An official announcement is expected on Thursday.
