Groups organize dance party protest for Vice President's visit during Columbus Pride
The first day of Columbus Pride will see a combination of political protest and what's being called a "Big LGBTQ Dance Party" in response to a visit from Vice President Mike Pence.
Pence is scheduled to speak about GOP tax reform at a special event at the Rennaissance Columbus downtown Friday afternoon. With Pride festivities also kicking off for the weekend, several groups have come together to bring the creative protest to the area.
The groups says Pence has "championed legalized discrimination against the LGBTQ community" for years and with the Vice President in town during Columbus Pride, they want to share a different message.
"We want to counter that anti-LGBT attitude that they have with a big, positive, loving dance party," said Jay Smith, one of the organizers.
The event is also co-sponsored by ProgressOhio and has listed several performers. They say the party is free and open to the public and they expect several hundred people to attend.
