HILLIARD, Ohio — Columbus and Norwich Township firefighters have started investigating what caused a fire at a town house in Hilliard. Firefighters on scene said the man who lives there came home right as the fire started.
The fire broke out around 3 p.m. Thursday on Singleton Drive. Battalion Chief Joe Richards said the homeowner pulled into his garage and saw smoke in the corner. He was able to get out safely but his home was quickly engulfed in flames. Richards said the home is a total loss.
Richards said the neighboring home had minor damage after firefighters went into the attic to put out the fire. The other two units in that building are okay.
Neighbors said they couldn't believe how quickly the fire spread.
"In a matter of minutes the whole garage was just a shell," said Nicole Montalbano, who lives a block away. "For it to spread as fast as it did, it was crazy."
Fire investigators said it was too early to say what might have caused the fire.
