COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — Honor. Share. Celebrate.
That's the mission of Honor Flight Columbus, which flies our veterans to Washington D.C. to visit their war memorials.
Thursday marked another mission by honoring 84 veterans.
After a full day in D.C., they were greeted with a hero's welcome inside John Glenn International by a crowd of nearly 1,500 people.
The first Veteran off of the plane was 94-year-old WWII Navy Veteran Howard Foster.
“I’m not a crybaby, but I could not hold the tears back,” said Foster. “I’ll tell you, it was fantastic. It was fantastic. And I’m so thankful.”
Thursday’s homecoming is a celebration that these Veterans did not receive the first time they came home.
“When I came back the first time, it wasn’t like this,” said Lester Taley, a Marine Veteran. “It surprised me. It’s heart-wrenching.”
The next Honor Flight happens on June 15. ABC 6 will be on the flight and will bring more of the stories from our veterans.
