A judge issued a $2 million bond for a man accused of forcing his way into a home and shooting another man before taking off with a one-year-old.

There was an outburst from the victim's family when Kalawn Lammkin walked into the courtroom Thursday morning. Family members hit the glass separating the gallery from the court and started yelling at Lammkin.

He's accused of kicking his way into a Franklinton home late Tuesday night, opening fire, and then taking his one-year-old son after threatening the boy's mother. Jamie Garrett was injured in the shooting and died at the hospital.

The little boy was later found safe at an east Columbus home, and Lammkin was arrested.

Earlier reporting

A man was charged with murder and kidnapping following a shooting in Franklinton late Tuesday night.

Kalawn Lammkin, 24, forced his way inside a home at 146 N. Yale Ave., opened fire, threatened the mom of his son, and then took the one-year-old boy, according to Franklin County Municipal Court documents.

Court documents showed the shooting injured Jamie Garrett, 26, who died a short time later at a hospital.

Detectives said a motive for the gunfire wasn't known, but it's possible Garrett simply may have gotten in the way during the confrontation.

SWAT officers found the uninjured child with the suspect about two hours later at a friend's home on Barnett Road in east Columbus, police said.

According to police, Lammkin was arrested without problems, but he denied being involved in the shooting.

He was set to be arraigned Thursday morning.

Officers returned the boy to his mother.

This was the 56th homicide in Columbus this year.

Anyone with information was asked to call Police at 614–645–4730 or crimestoppers at 614–461-TIPS (8447).
