The Tunnel to Towers Foundation paid off the mortgage for the family of Washington Township Firefighter/Paramedic Charles Swank, who died while training late last year.

Swank served for four years in Iraq and Afghanistan in the US Army's 82nd Airborne, where he earned a Bronze Star. He was survived by his wife, Alaina, and his five children.

He first became a full-time firefighter in 2007, working in Mount Vernon, Ohio.

The foundation said he was attending a firefighting training in Pensacola, Florida, when he suffered a deadly cardiac event on Dec. 8, 2022.

He was most recently with the Washington Township Fire Department in Dublin, Ohio.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation delivered 30 mortgage-free homes or mortgage payoffs to families ahead of Memorial Day, a release from the group said.

"To all of the families who know the true meaning of Memorial Day, I thank you for your service and sacrifice. We know that no service member serves alone. It is our honor to support these families who have sacrificed so much so we can all enjoy the freedoms America has to offer,” said Frank Siller Chairman and CEO of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
