Ohioans purchased almost 5.9 million tickets for the Friday night drawing of the second largest Mega Millions jackpot.

Despite millions of tickets worth $24.5 million, an Illinois ticket was the only one to bring home the $1.28 billion jackpot.

Approximately 75 cents of each $2 Mega Millions purchase in Ohio goes to the lottery profits education fund, the Ohio Lottery said.

“This has been a thrilling ride for retailers and our players,” says Ohio Lottery Director Pat McDonald, who also serves as the Lead Director for the Mega Millions Consortium. “We have witnessed one of the biggest jackpot runs in Mega Millions history. This jackpot has been a boost for our retailers, players and our contribution to education.”

Sales from the jackpot run that began April 19 generated approximately $28.5 million in profits for the Ohio Lottery Profits Education Fund.
