A woman was shot multiple times and killed in a police-involved shooting in Franklinton. An officer was also injured when he was stabbed in the hand, according to police.

Crews responded to the report of a shooting on South Yale Avenue around 11:30am Thursday. It happened outside an apartment building near the intersection with Bellows Avenue.

Authorities say 23-year-old Donna Castleberry was shot multiple times and taken to Grant Medical Center in critical condition. She later died from her injuries. Columbus Police say an altercation occurred when an undercover vice officer attempted to arrest a suspected prostitute in a Columbus Police vehicle behind an apartment house.

"At some point there was an altercation between the two of them and he was stabbed and he fired multiple times striking her," said Columbus Police Sgt Rich Weiner.

Weiner tells ABC 6/FOX 28 the undercover officer was investigating complaints related to prostitution in the neighborhood at the time of the incident. Investigators are now trying to determine if the veteran officer was posing as a customer or talking with an informant when the gunfire happened inside the vehicle.

"We do know he was working vice complaints - as to exactly what he was doing we have to find out from him," said Weiner.

Police have not yet identified the woman because family members have not been notified.

Officer Andrew Mitchell a 30-year veteran of the force underwent surgery to repair what police described as his "severely stabbed" hand.
