COLUMBUS, Ohio -- An 18-year-old was hospitalized in critical condition after he was shot by a Columbus Police SWAT officer during a sting Wednesday night.
Columbus Police said SWAT was conducting a "decoy officer" operation connected to reported online robberies. Investigators say a SWAT officer posed as a decoy pretending to buy something and met the suspect in the parking lot of the Madison Grove Townhomes. That's when the teen allegedly pointed a gun at the decoy officer and robbed him. Another SWAT officer providing cover shot the teen, Columbus Police said.
The suspect was identified as Kyler Collier, 18. He was rushed to Grant Medical Center in critical condition.
"We put ourselves in positions to protect the public. The reality is that could have just as easily been another citizen that happened to that unfortunately could have been killed or simply robbed and gone through that experience. We put ourselves in those positions on a regular basis so hopefully citizens don't have to," said FOP President Keith Ferrell.
Collier has been charged with aggravated robbery.
No officers were injured. A gun was recovered at the scene.
