The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction said the two escaped by "concealing themselves in a dumpster."
The following prison officials were placed on administrative leave:
An internal investigation is ongoing, ODRC said.
Gillespie was convicted of murder in Paulding County, and Lee was convicted of burglary, breaking and entering, and safecracking in Allen and Auglaize Counties.
On Wednesday morning, the Henderson Police Department in Kentucky said they found a stolen vehicle which they believed was occupied by Gillespie and Lee.
Officers initiated a traffic stop, and the vehicle attempted to flee. The car wrecked after police pursued it, and the two occupants fled on foot.
Police said Lee was arrested, but Gillespie is on the run.
