Public Hearing underway as AEP Ohio proposes another price hike

AEP Ohio is looking to hike up prices another 5 percent in 2024 if the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio approves their Electric Security Plan application. They say the change comes from the cost of energy supply going up, and that change has community members bracing for a financial pinch. May 22, 2023 (WSYX)

Starting June 1, AEP customers will notice a major change in their monthly bill. Some could see a nearly 30 percent increase.

AEP Ohio is looking to hike up prices another 5% in 2024 if the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio approves their Electric Security Plan application. They say the change comes from the cost of energy supply going up, and that change has community members bracing for a financial pinch.

"It's frustrating because where is the power in the consumer's hands," M. Margo Wakefield said. "Big business just having their way and reaching into our pockets whenever they want to."

There are a few options to help lessen the blow financially.

PUCO offers a PIPP program aimed to help households with utility costs. Families can also see if their community falls under an aggregation program. Another option, compare rates through PUCO's Apples to Apples program.

Karin Nordstorm, an attorney with Clean Energy Attorney Ohio Environmental Council suggests if comparing rates to choose a fixed rate or a variable rate. She stresses it's important for families to do their research before changing options.

"It's important that communities are able to have a choice and transparency in how their services is being distributed to them," she said.

Consumers can voice their thoughts during two public hearings:

  • Monday, May 22 at 12:30 p.m. — PUCO Offices, 180 East Broad St., Hearing Room 11-B
  • Tuesday, May 23 at 5 p.m. — Ohio History Connection, 800 East 17th Ave., Cardinal Classroom

Nordstorm hopes customers worries are addressed during the hearings.
