Raw sewage emptying to backyard in Marion, landlord under fire

City officials thought they had a smelly, disgusting situation under control, but calls from ABC 6/FOX 28 viewers helped expose raw sewage emptying from a Marion home right into the backyard.

It's a problem we first showed you in January, that appears to still be an issue.

Earlier this year, the city ordered landlord Jon Settlemire to connect his home to a sewer line, but Settlemire resisted. After a court order and a fine, Settlemire did connect the sewer. But neighbors called ABC 6, claiming raw waste continued to flow and that's exactly what we found in the backyard.

Neighbors, who did not want to be identified, said they fear the sewage is making them sick.

"I've been sick for a year now, every morning throwing up," said one neighbor.

City officials said they could cite Settlemire again and if he fails to comply again, he could face jail time.

Earlier this year, Settlemire spent ten days in jail for failing to get another Marion property he owns up to fire code.

Marion Public Health officials gave Settlemire 24 hours to get the situation repaired.
