Search for missing inmate ends after death by suicide
Paulding County dispatchers confirmed that the search for a missing inmate ended Monday evening after he shot and killed himself.
The search was on for 32-year-old Brand Powell after he overpowered a deputy on Saturday.
Authorities determined Powell was possibly in the rural area of Antwerp Monday. He was then found in the crawl space under his parents' home.
Law enforcement attempted to get Powell to come out of the crawl space peacefully, but he did not comply.
The Paulding County Sheriff said Powell took his own life around 9:30 p.m.
"I would like to thank the numerous law enforcement agencies: Ohio State Highway Patrol, FBI, US Marshal Services, neighboring Sheriff’s and their deputies and their personnel who have assisted us around the clock since this past Friday," said Paulding County Sheriff Jason K. Landers.
"While this is not the outcome law enforcement had hoped for, law enforcement hopes the community can rest knowing this armed and dangerous individual is no longer a danger to the community."
The sheriff said the investigation continued Tuesday morning.
