Woman's death marks first murder of the year after shooting near Groveport
Columbus Police responded to the first murder of 2018 near Groveport Monday.
Police were dispatched to the 4000 block of Yukon Avenue around 11:22 Sunday night. When officers arrived on scene, they said a woman was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Investigators said 30-year-old Ashley Marie Newman was killed by her husband, 32-year-old Sean M. Newman. She was pronounced dead at 12:14 a.m. on New Year's Day after she was rushed to Grant Medical Center in critical condition.
Police said that Mr. Newman fled the scene before they arrived, but he was later found after a car accident on I-270 near Alum Creek Drive around 12:20 a.m. He was then charged with murder.
Columbus Police have called this the first homicide of 2018.
